SEGA has announced a new console that they will be bringing out this year in Japan. It is the 30th anniversary of the Mega Drive, also known as the Sega Genesis, so in honor of that anniversary, SEGA is going to release a mini version of the console.
The original console had fierce completion against Nintendo when the original was released, and it did not fare well in Japan. However, it did a lot better in the United States of America. The console originally had around 81 games for it that were built-in and sold around 30.5 million copies. One of the things added to the console’s success was the range of arcade games. Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA’s series, was vastly popular which contributed to the sales of the console.
When the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out two years later, many journalists called this the ‘console war‘ like with the Xbox and PS that we have today. It was only last week when SEGA made a statement that they wanted to get back into the hardware business. They left the business in 2001, after the failure of Dreamcast console.
“Maintaining the balance between our hardware and software enterprises while securing profits has become extremely difficult,” the company said. “We will rapidly shift our focus to the content business.”
But after seventeen years, it seems they will be rejoining the market for their new console. Many details have yet to disclosed, but we know that Sonic 3 will not be included on the console as it “has license issues with the music,” according to AtGames. AtGames hints that the features of the console will be relatively the same to the original but with a few tweaks.
