Preacher: Backdoors Review | The Nerd Stash

Preacher returned tonight with another all new episode titled “Backdoors.” First, get your mind out of the gutter because “Backdoors” has nothing to do with a second rate porn film. Although, I will be reviewing that “Backdoors” film later. The title of this episode is in reference to Eugene trying to escape from Hell with the help of Adolph Hitler. I still find it funny as I write that. Funny in the sense of how off that wall parts of this show can be. Preacher is a show where one of the segments has Adolph Hitler agreeing to help a young boy with an…arseface try and escape from Hell. Anyway, getting to other parts of the episode. The Saint of Killers has somehow escaped from the swamp, Cassidy becomes increasingly concerned about Dennis and Jesse finally gets a lead. Only two episodes are left in season two of Preacher.

[Tick Season One Review]

I was fairly happy with this weeks episode of Preacher. I felt like it had the right combination of drama, comedy and mystery and wasn’t overly focused on one or the other. The Tulip PTSD storyline I couldn’t be more than ready to be passed. I felt like that chapter of the character has been dragged out far too long. It looks like Preacher is closer than ever to ending that for Tulip with her forcing Jesse to tell her the truth about the Saint. I imagine with the Saint now out and roaming a confrontation with Jesse/Tulip is inevitable. Once that happens, I suspect that some type of scenario will play out that has Tulip finally get past this PTSD phase. I for one am thoroughly looking forward to that time.

[Death Note Review]

This episode of Preacher flipped flopped some as with past episodes between different characters as the episode played out. For me, Cassidy and Dennis are one of the most intriguing parts. When Cassidy finally saved his son Dennis from succumbing to sickness by turning him, the obvious question was “What’s next?” Given the history, it wouldn’t have made sense for Dennis to just leave and go out on his own. I also didn’t see Dennis as becoming part of the group. So, the idea has been very subtlety floated in the show that Cassidy would have to go against his son Dennis. The power of immortality has gone to Dennis’s heads and it’s becoming clear that Cassidy and son may eventually have to have a show down.

Herr Starr continues to be a fun character to watch. Starr has finally revealed his plan to Jesse which is to have him use Genisis in the world. The Messiah would be cast out and Jesse would take his place. Jesse eventually goes against this. Then comes the big reveal that Starr is actually holding The Saint of Killers. It appears that the same situation from season one has come full circle. Just like Fiore and DeBlanc recruited The Saint to kill Jesse, Starr is now doing the same thing. A weakness for The Saint now is that he can be commanded by Jesse. Perhaps The Saint requesting a word with Satan in the comic con trailer will remedy this weakness.

While I enjoyed this episode of Preacher, for the most part, the show is seeming to stall out in some ways. We’ve been in hell countless times to check on Eugene with very little progression of anything really. I expected Eugene to be a hardened villain by this point but he seems to be the same person. Tulip’s PTSD has just dragged on and on. Preacher just seems to be floundering in its New Orleans setting.

[Game of Thrones Finale Review]

AMC currently has the wrong promo up on YouTube for the next episode “On Your Knees.” Despite that, I can tell you that The Saint has a significant part in that episode. I’m anxious to see the return of the character and how the next showdown with Jesse will go.
